Here's some mini-chapters, for lack of better description. Basically, they're the stories that weren't told in the actual story because they had nowhere they actually fit or were too short to actually make much use of. Enjoy!
“Red? To this kind of concert?” Cy asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, I didn’t know there was a color dress code,” Jessica DeSidiro replied, looking down at her t-shirt. “Besides, I thought it looked kind of goth-ish…”
Cy shook her head. “If a friend of mine heard you… she hates the word ‘goth,’” she muttered.
“Okay, enough about my clothes,” Jessica grumbled. “Can we go now? It’s bad enough I was your last resort for this concert thing, but now you’re picking on my clothes!”
“Well, I’m sorry,” Cy replied. “All my other friends are sick, out of town, or busy. Besides, I think you’ll enjoy these bands.”
“Which ones are they again?”
“HIM and Aiden.”
“Oh, right. Never heard of either.”
“Well, you’re in for a real treat, then,” Cy replied. “Come on, let’s get to the House of Blues. I want to get something to eat before the concert.”
Jessica leaned against Cy for support as she zipped her boot back up. It was wall to wall people, with more than one person smoking. Jessica wrinkled her nose, disliking the smell.
So many people! she thought. I hope I don’t get overheated and pass out like I did in high school that time. She looked around, trying to locate the nearest escapes from the crowd. She smirked a little, nodding appreciatively at the many attractive guys in the crowd. Well, these kinds of events sure do attract a lot of hotties, she thought. Oh, and that guy over there looks sort of like my ex, Alec. Freaky. She shifted her gaze, not wanting to think about her ex-boyfriend, the workaholic who’d been unable to find time for her more than once a month. He’s like a period personified, she’d thought more than once about him.
She raised an eyebrow, noticing a guy nearby who stood out. He looks a bit older than most of the people here, she thought. Ew, bet he’s one of those perv types who hangs around the clubs in the Quarter, trying to hit on all the young chicks. Still, she had to admit he was pretty cute (for a potential pervert) and rather well-suited to her tastes, especially with his long dark hair.
“Ooh, it’s about to start!” Cy exclaimed, bouncing around excitedly.
“Calm down,” Jessica said firmly. “You’re embarrassing me. I swear, I can’t wait for you to get a girlfriend, just so I don’t have to deal with this kind of stuff alone.”
“Oh, I bet you’re going to be pushing people aside, trying to climb onto the stage,” Cy replied, smirking a little. “The lead singer of HIM is just your type…”
“Yeah, sure,” Jessica replied, rolling her eyes.
“Sexy voice, dark hair, big eyes…”
“Shut up! People can hear you!” Jessica cried out, blushing.
“So what? Most of the chicks here are probably here to drool over Ville Valo anyway and would agree with me. A bunch of the guys, too, for that matter.”
“Oh, shut up.”
An hour into the concert, Jessica had lost track of time and stopped caring whether Cy was embarrassing her or not. This Ville Valo guy was pretty hot. However, the close-packed crowd was starting to get to her, especially given that several of the guys nearby had decided to try to start a mosh pit in the crowded area.
Gotta… get away from the mosh pit idiots… she thought. She once again sought out the easiest path away from the crowd. No escape! she thought. Damn!
Just then, one of the many guys who’d been trying to start a mosh pit nearby slammed into her, sending her flying into the nearest person.
“Sorry!” she yelled to the stranger, over the din of the music. Then, her eyes widened. It was the guy she’d noticed earlier, the one she’d noticed was older than most of the other people present.
“It’s okay,” he replied. To the attempted mosh pit, he yelled, “Hey, careful who you slam into! If she wanted to be part of it, she’d have joined by now!”
One of the guys yelled out some rather rude words. The stranger glared at them. “Come on,” he said to Jessica. “I’m getting you away from those dolts.”
“I’m not leaving with you,” she said sharply.
“We’re not leaving the building or even this room. I’m moving us closer to the stage so you can enjoy the show without dealing with those losers,” he replied. He placed his hands protectively on her shoulders and guided her through the crowd until they were right in front of the stage. “Better?”
“Much better!” she replied. He seems nice, I guess. Maybe he’s trying to charm me first. Won’t work! she thought.
The rest of the concert went well, and Jessica was rather surprised that the guy didn’t try to flirt with her or even touch her unless absolutely necessary. When the concert ended, the guy watched the mosh pit guys leave, then said, “It’s safe for you to leave now. I doubt they’ll bother either of us. You take care of yourself, okay?”
“Yeah, sure,” Jessica replied.
The guy smiled and walked away. Jessica stared as he left. Guess he wasn’t a perv. Or maybe I just wasn’t his type, she thought.
Cy leaned in close and said, smirking slightly, “So, I see you made a new friend.”
“Nah. Just some guy who was protecting me from the moshers.”
“Sure,” Cy replied, winking. “You can tell me the truth.”
“That is the truth.”
“Oh. So, did you like the concert?”
“Loved it!” Jessica replied.
“You want I should call you Mrs. Valo now?”
Jessica chuckled. “Just ‘Valo’ is fine,” she replied.
“Fine, Valo it is,” Cy said. “And now, would you like to go home, Valo?”
Several months had passed since the concert. Valo was now back in college, and she was lost.
“Who the hell decided to number the classrooms all screwy like this?” she muttered, turning in circles. “I swear, if I find out who it was, I’ll kill ‘em!” Just then, she noticed a professor walking out of an office. “Excuse me,” she called out to him. “Can you please tell me where 256 is?”
“Sure,” the professor replied, turning to her. “All you do is walk out of that door down the hall, turn left, and go through the first door you’ll see.”
Valo stared at the professor. It’s… it’s the guy from the concert! she thought.
“What?” he asked. “Is there something on my face?”
Valo frowned a bit, then said slowly, “Did you go to a concert at the House of Blues a few months ago?”
“Yeah, the HIM concert. Why?”
“I was there too.”
The professor stared at her for a few seconds. “Oh! The mosh pit girl!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah…” Valo said slowly.
“Wow, I didn’t know you went here.”
“Well, I didn’t know you taught here.”
“Yeah, I’m a poli sci professor. I’m probably keeping you from your class, so you’d better go.”
“Yeah…” Valo replied slowly.
“If you want, we can meet up for coffee or tea or something like that afterwards.”
“I guess. But won’t you get in trouble?”
“Nah. You’re not one of my students. Now get to class before you get in trouble.”
“Okay, okay. I will! It was nice to see you again… uh…”
“Grant. Grant Veneto.”
“I’m Jessica DeSidiro. Valo to my friends.”
“Well, it was nice to meet you too, Jessica. Now get to class before I decide to pick you up and drag you over there.”
“Fine. I’ll see you soon, I guess.”
“Sure.”
Grant watched her hurry off to her class and smiled a little. She seems like a sweet girl, he thought. Maybe we’ll have a nice talk over coffee. We’ll probably go our separate ways after that, but… oh well. It’ll be fun, at least. It sure was nice seeing her again.
WHEN VALO MET GRANT
“Red? To this kind of concert?” Cy asked, raising an eyebrow.
