Complete List of References
Books, Movies, Songs, Etc.
Chapter 1:
-Chapter Marker: The idea of having a chapter marker was inspired by various manga series, which separate each section with an interesting illustration related to the series as a divider between chapters. The outfits in this particular marker were roughly inspired by the clothes worn by the characters in “The Breakfast Club.”
-Emily’s Speech: When I was a junior in high school, in my English class, we had to present a speech on a topic that mattered to us. Since it was an honors-level course, most of my classmates spoke on why colleges should take into consideration whether or not a student had taken honors classes, etc. One girl spoke on why cheerleading should be considered a sport. And I presented on… well, basically, I said what Emily did. And I ticked off a few people with my comment about the average woman being closer to a size twelve than four, somehow. So, drawn from real-life experience.
-Houdini: As in, Harry Houdini, famous magician.
-Tiffani being kicked off the team for her weight: This has happened to several people in real life. A woman lost her job as a flight attendant for being four pounds over the weight limit. Another young lady was kicked off of a school team (I think it was majorettes, can’t remember since the book isn’t in front of me) for being “overweight” for the team (a few pounds over the limit, but still a healthy weight). And so forth.
-Ophelia’s Records: Lots of interesting stuff here. First of all, based on what we can see, her birthday is October 31, and the area code of where she lives begins with the number “50.” We can also see that she’s won quite a few awards and has done very well in art, English, and science classes.
-Ophelia Desdemona Foley: So many references and puns packed into one name! Ophelia and Desdemona are females characters in Shakespeare’s plays who died in tragic ways. And her last name… she’s the first-born Foley, making her the first Foley, O… (first folio)
-Second place is the same thing as being first loser: Common saying (usually worded “Second place is first loser”)
- “And the Lord sent unto the group a jock and a camera crew, and it was good”: Parodying the first part of the book of Genesis in the Bible
-Angela Julie Paxton = Angelina Jolie Pitt? Actually, I think this can be chalked up to coincidence. Ha ha.
